Recovery following a dental implant procedure

Dr. Rich Flores and the team at Rich Flores, DDS, LLC in Willoughby, Ohio, understand that situations may arise where you may need to replace lost or extracted teeth. With tooth replacement options such as dental implants, you can improve the smile’s function, health, and appearance with a long-lasting, reliable solution

How do dental implants work?

A dental implant is a titanium post with a small screw-like appearance. Our team will place the dental implant in the jawbone with sufficient local anesthesia. Osseointegration, the growth of bone around the dental implant stabilizes the implant in the jawbone over the next 3 months following implant placement. This provides the best foundation for a dental crown over the abutment of the dental implant placed above the gum line.

Facts about dental implant recovery

Following are some things you should know about the placement and care of dental implants after they have been placed in the bone during oral surgery:

  • Expect some discomfort. You should not experience extreme pain or discomfort after the procedure, but you will notice some swelling and bruising around the area. Slight pain can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication
  • Healing is required before the implant is restored. Dental crowns and other restorations being used over the implant cannot be placed until the area has healed, which can take 3 months on average.
  • Taking care of the implant and your smile after the procedure is critical. Take time and follow all instructions from Dr. Rich Flores to ensure proper healing and recovery. If the implant does not heal properly, it will not remain in place, and the procedure may need to be redone
